"What Do You Mean?" was the 23rd single to debut at No.1 on the Hot 100. The first song to achieve the feat was "You Are Not Alone" by Michael Jackson (b. 29 August 1958), on 2 September 1995 - some 37 years after the first Hot 100 chart was published on 4 August 1958. The other male solo artists with No.1 debuts are: Puff Daddy (aka Sean Combs, b. 4 November 1969), on 14 June 1997; Elton John (b. 25 March 1947), on 11 October 1997; Clay Aiken (b. 30 November 1978), on 28 June 2003; Taylor Hicks (b. 7 October 1976), on 1 July 2006; Eminem (b. Bieber took the record from Baauer, who was 23 years 306 days when "Harlem Shake" entered the chart at the top.

The youngest solo artist (male or female) to debut at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 is Fantasia (aka Fantasia Barrino, b. 30 June 1984), the winner of season 3 (2004) of American Idol, who was 20 years 10 days old when "I Believe" made its chart-topping debut on 10 July 2004.

The youngest person (male, female or group member) to debut at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 is Mike Keith (b. 19 December 1979), a (now former) member of the R&B quartet 112, who featured alongside Puff Daddy and Faith Evans on the Notorious B.I.G. tribute "I'll Be Missing You". The single debuted at No.1 on 14 June 1997, at which time Keith was 17 years 177 days old. Two other 112 members, Marvin "Slim" Scandrick (b. 25 September 1978) and Daron Jones (b. 28 December 1977), were also younger than Fantasia at the time of a Hot 100 No.1 debut, at 18 years 262 days and 19 years 168 days old, respectively. The fourth group member, Quinnes "Q" Parker (b. 24 March 1977) was 20 years 82 days old when "I'll Be Missing You" entered at the top - i.e., younger than Bieber was upon his No.1 bow.
