Reinhold Messner (Italy) and Peter Habeler (Austria) climbed Gasherbrum I on the Pakistani–Chinese border without supplementary oxygen on 10 August 1975. At 8,080 m (26,509 ft), Gasherbrum I is the 11th highest mountain in the world; it was first ascended in 1958, by a US team.
Messner and Habeler climbed via the northwest route. This climb was the first time that an 8000er had been ascended alpine-style (that is, without the use of bottled oxygen).
