Reinhold Messner (Italy) climbed Manaslu in the Nepalese Himalayas without supplementary oxygen on 25 April 1972. At 8,163 m (26,781 ft), Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world; it was first ascended in 1956, by a Japanese team. Messner climbed the then-unknown south face.
