Simone Moro (Italy) and Piotr Morawski (Poland) climbed Shisha Pangma (8,027 m; 26,335 ft) on 14 January 2005, the first summit of the mountain in the calendar winter, when conditions are more treacherous. Shisha Pangma, located in Tibet, is the fourteenth highest mountain and one of the 8,000ers – mountains with a main peak over 8,000 m (26,246 ft). The “calendar winter” extends from 21 December to 20 March, while the “meteorological winter” extends from 1 December to 28 February. Because of the extreme conditions, winter ascents are much more taxing.
