The record for the most wins of a Tony Award for a character is three, shared between two roles, one female, the other male and both from musicals. The colourful lead character of Mama Rose in Gypsy (1959) has provided wins for Angela Lansbury (1975), Tyne Daly (1990) and Patti LuPone (2008), while the male comic lead Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962) resulted in wins for Zero Mostel (1963), Phil Silvers (1972) and Nathan Lane (1996). Gypsy was written by Jule Styne (UK/USA) had lyrics provided by Stephen Sondheim (USA), while Sondheim wrote both music and lyrics for A Funny Thing... Pseudolus was one of a number of roles played by Jason Alexander (USA) in his Tony-winning performance in Jerome Robbins' Broadway (1989) but he only sang one song ("Comedy Tonight") as this character, so does not count towards the record.
