The first person to climb the Kosciuszko version of the Seven Summits was Richard “Dick” Bass (USA), who completed the climb on 30 April 1985. The "Bass" version of this challenge - to climb the highest point of each continent - is based on the fact that Kosciuszko is the highest point in continental Australia, at 2,228 m (7,310 ft). Bass climbed six of the seven mountains in one year (1983) - Aconcagua, McKinley, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Vinson and Kosciuszko - then finally conquered Everest, after various attempts, in 1985. If one assumes that the highest point in Oceania is the 4,884-m (16,024-ft) Puncak Jaya, aka the Carstensz Pyramid, in the Papua Province of Indonesia, then climbers would have to attempt the "Carstensz" or "Messner" list (named after Reinhold Messner of Italy, who first proposed that the more demanding mountain should replace the relatively easy Kosciuszko).
