A 520,000-carat (104-kilogram/244-pound) aquamarine (Al2Be3[Si6O18]) – a variety of beryl – was discovered near Marambaia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1910. It measured some 48 centimetres (19 inches) long and 38 centimetres (15 inches) in diameter and reportedly yielded more than 200,000 carats of gem‑quality stones. Most of the world's aquamarines are exported from Brazil. Normally pale green or blue when unearthed, they are typically heat-treated in order to intensify their blue colouring.
