As of 6 May 2015, Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) was the world's top-ranked batsman on the ICC's (International Cricket Council's) "Test Player Rankings" list. With 909 ranking points, Sangakkara was one point ahead of South Africa's AB de Villiers, with a second South African, Hashim Amla, in third place on 891 points. Sangakkara took the number one position from AB de Villiers in January 2015, during Sri Lanka's two-match away series in New Zealand, securing top spot with an innings of 203 in the Second Test in Wellington, New Zealand, on 3-4 January.

Sangakkara achieved his highest ever ICC rating as a Test batsman - 938 points - on 1 December 2007, and he became the highest-ranked Test batsman for the first time on 18 December 2007. He has remained in the top 10 ever since (as of 6 May 2015).

The highest-ever ICC rating for a Test batsman was achieved by Australia's Don Bradman - 962 points.
