Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) reached the milestone of 12,000 Test runs in his 224th innings, against New Zealand at Basin Reserve in Wellington, New Zealand, on 3 January 2015. The prolific left-hander was only the fifth batsman - after Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid - to score 12,000 runs in Test matches, getting there in 23 fewer innings than both Tendulkar and Ponting. Sangakkara brought up 12,000 Test runs - the first Sri Lankan to do so - by taking two runs (the first of which was his 12,000th Test run) off the bowling of Trent Boult in Sri Lanka's first innings, having started the match on 11,995 runs.

Despite bowling out New Zealand for 221 on the first day (3 January 2015) and Sangakkara going on to score 203 runs in his record-breaking innings, New Zealand won the match by 193 runs to wrap up the two-match series 2-0.
