Highest-grossing science fiction film at the domestic box office (inflation-adjusted)

Based on its domestic gross adjusted for ticket-price inflation, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope is the most successful sci-fi movie of all time. According to box-office intelligence service The Numbers, the movie’s debut in 1977 plus its various re-releases (in 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1997) earned $1.33 bn (£825 m) in North America alone, surpassing the adjusted grosses for ET: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Avatar (2009).
