Originally launched in 1989, the Game Boy was on sale for 14 years in various guises – the original, Play It Loud, Pocket, Light and Color – before it was discontinued in March 2003. It was superseded by the Game Boy Advance, though this handheld only had half the lifespan of its predecessor, manufactured between 2001 and 2008. The release of the Nintendo DS in 2004 is another key factor that contributed to the demise of the Game Boy.
