Founded in October 1979 by a group of Atari programmers, Activision is one of the longest-running videogames publishers, and also the world’s first independent software developer and distributor. Activision’s first smash-hit game was the groundbreaking platformer Pitfall!, which was released in April 1982 and sold more than 4.5 million copies for the Atari 2600 – making it the console’s second best-selling title after PAC-Man.
