On 10 November 1981, a videogame arcade called Twin Galaxies opened its doors in Ottumwa, Iowa, USA. Its founder, Walter Day, sought to turn gaming into an international sport by creating contests, enforcing rules, crowning champions – and measuring world records. He began by collecting high scores for games from more than 100 arcades, releasing them as the Twin Galaxies National Scoreboard. Since then, hundreds of thousands of videogame scores have been adjudicated and collected, with high-scores logged and record holders honoured. The old system of using select expert referees has been replaced by an automated peer-review system adhering to GWR submission standards, ensuring that Twin Galaxies remains the gold standard for videogame adjudication.
