The largest egg produced by any living bird is that of the ostrich (Struthio camelus). The average example measures 6–8 in (15–20 cm) in length, 4–6 in (10–15 cm) in diameter and weighs 3 lb 10 oz–3 lb 14 oz (1.65–1.78 kg) – equal to the volume of two dozen hen's eggs.
Although the shell is just 0.16 in (1.5 mm) thick, it can support an adult person weighing some 280 lb (127 kg).
