At a cost of $137 million (£96,683,100) including marketing costs, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was the most expensive videogame-inspired movie ever made. Released in 2001 by Columbia Pictures, it recouped just $32 million at the US box office, meaning it was also one of the least successful videogame-inspired movies ever made. Lastly, the film was the first computer-generated animated movie with photorealistic characters.
This formerly held the record for most expensive film inspired by a videogame but was broken by Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in 2010, which cost an estimated $200 million to make.
