On 22 May 2024, 54-year-old mountain guide Kami Rita Sherpa (Nepal) summitted Everest (aka Sagarmāthā; Chomolungma), taking his total true-summit ascents of mountains higher than 8,000 m (26,247 ft) to 41 across his mountaineering career.
His total includes 30 ascents of Everest (also a record) between 1994 and 2024, eight of the 8,188-m (26,864-ft) Cho Oyu between 2001 and 2016, one of the 8,516-m (27,940-ft) Lhotse (2011), one of K2 (2014), the second-highest mountain at 8,611 m (28,251ft), and one full ascent of Manaslu (8,163 m; 26,781 ft) in 2023.
