The longest gap between ocean rows is 17 years 324 days by Tom McClean (UK, b. 10 February 1943), who ended his first row, the crossing of the Atlantic west to east, on 27 July 1969 and started his second row, on the same route, on 16 June 1987. John Fairfax (UK), the first person to row any ocean solo, arrived only 8 days earlier, having rowed 6,340 km (3,940 miles) along the Atlantic route east to west from San Agustin, Grand Canaria, to Hollywood Beach, Miami, USA on board Britannia between 20 January and 19 July 1969.
