When
When Nintendo announced in March 2015 that its characters would be appearing on Android and iOS platforms, many gamers were surprised: for multiple console generations Mario, Luigi and their friends had only appeared on Nintendo hardware, but this has not always been the case. Before Nintendo launched its Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in 1986, the company had allowed its games to be ported to a wide variety of platforms, including the Commodore 64 and Atari 2600. In 1984, Atari even released a version of Mario Bros. for the Apple II computer. As of 2015, it is 31 years and counting since the last game featuring Mario appeared on Apple hardware.
