The eight movies in the Harry Potter series, based on the best-selling books by J K Rowling (UK) and released from 2001 to 2011, grossed a total of $7,726,174,542 (£4.95 billion) at the worldwide box office, to become the highest-grossing fantasy film series, according to The Numbers.
The most successful entry in the franchise was the last movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011), which conjured up a gross of $1,341,511,219 globally.
This also makes Harry Potter the highest-grossing movie series of any genre to date.
