Coal is a rock composed primarily of carbon and without a crystalline structure. It is formed when dead planet material becomes peat, which then over geological time becomes buried and metamorphosed into lignite, then sub-bituminous coal, bituminous coal and finally anthracite. This last form is regarded as the highest class of coal, with the carbon content being up to 90%. In 2010 China produced 509,333,000 metric tonnes of anthracite.
