The first naturally occurring sample of bridgmanite has been discovered and isolated in a meteorite. Until now this mineral, whose chemical name is magnesium iron silicate perovskite, lacked an official name as a natural sample had yet to be thoroughly examined. Bridgmanite is believed to make up around 38% of Earth’s volume and exists in the planet’s lower mantle, where it is stable under high temperatures and pressures.
