Tommy Caldwell (USA, b. 11 August 1978) and Kevin Jorgeson (USA, b. 7 October 1984) became the first to free climb the of the Dawn Wall route of El Capitan in Yosemite on 14 January 2015. They started their ascent of on 27 December 2014 and took 19 days to complete all 32 "pitches" (a rope length). A free climb involves using just the hands and feet to ascend, reserving ropes and other climbing gear only to stop a fall.
