Brendon McCullum (New Zealand) cracked an 18-ball half-century against England during an ICC World Cup group match at Westpac Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand, on 20 February 2015. The captain's brutal knock featured seven fours and four sixes, with all but two of his 13 scoring shots smacked to the boundary. McCullum brought up his fifty (54 not out) with the first of four consecutive sixes off Steven Finn, in the sixth over of New Zealand's innings. The only scoring shots in his fifty that didn't go to or over the boundary were two singles, at the end of the first and third overs.

McCullum was eventually dismissed for 77 off 25 balls, with New Zealand on 105. His 40-minute innings featured eight fours and seven sixes. McCullum's strike rate of 308 (308 runs scored for every 100 balls faced) was the highest strike rate for any batsman scoring a half-century at the World Cup (and the second highest overall after team-mate James Franklin's 31 not out off eight balls - strike rate 387.50 - against Canada in 2011). McCullum's 52 not out off 21 balls against Canada in 2007 was the previous best strike rate for an innings of fifty or more (247.61).

In the same match, New Zealand bowler Tim Southee claimed seven wickets for 33 runs - the third best bowling analysis at the World Cup.

New Zealand (125-2) beat England (123 all out) by eight wickets in 12.2 overs. The BBC's cricket correspondent, Jonathan Agnew, described the Pool A encounter as the "most one-sided international match I've seen". The day/night match was over so quickly that the floodlights did not have to be switched on.
