Hong Kong, China, is one of the world’s most densely populated cities, with more than 7.5 million people living in an area of 1,110 square kilometres (429 square miles), which is more than double the density of Manhattan in New York City, USA. To move its masses, Hong Kong has developed a highly efficient and advanced transport system with the highest public transit share of any city in the world. Approximately 81% of all transport trips in the city are made via public transit, where each day there are 12.4 million public transit passenger boardings based on 2019 figures (down slightly from 12.9 million in 2018).
Other major cities with high relative use of public transport include Bogotá, Colombia, with 5.8 million daily trips giving it a modal share of 61% (2018 data) and Seoul, South Korea, with an estimated public transit modal share of 65.1% (2012 data).
