Snow was first made using a machine in the 1940s by Dr Ray Ringer (Canada) and colleagues. Their discovery was accidental while researching the formation of ice on jet engines. They sprayed water into a low-temperature wind tunnel in front of a jet engine, which proceeded to produce snow out of its rear end. They produced so much snow that the wind tunnel and engine had to be regularly shut down in order to clear away the snow. Uninterested in pursuing a commercial application, Ringer published his results to the scientific community which ultimately led to a US patent being granted to other researchers in 1954.
