First formation of a brinicle filmed

Brinicles are pipes of ice that form beneath sea ice. They form when sea ice grows above, exuding supercold, supersaline water, which sinks down the pipe of ice. If a brinicle reaches the sea floor, in shallow conditions, the supercold supersaline water can spread across the ocean floor, freezing and killing any lifeforms in its path. The process was first filmed by the BBC for their series Frozen Planet in 2011 under Antarctic sea ice in McMurdo Sound.
