Carajas Mine, Para, northern Brazil, contains around 7.27 billion tonnes of iron ore as of December 2012. It was discovered accidentally in the 1960s by surveyors who landed on a hill in the area to refuel their helicopter and took samples upon noticing how barren the land was. Carajas mine also produces other metals including gold, copper and tin. In 2012 it produced 106.7 million tonnes of iron ore.
