Australia became the first men's national football team to win two different continental trophies when they triumphed in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup in Sydney, Australia, on 31 January 2015. They had previously won the OFC Nations Cup in 1980, 1996, 2000 and 2004. Australia had been runners-up in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, but went one better on home soil owing to an extra-time winning goal from James Troisi.

Mexico have reached the Copa America (CONMEBOL) final twice, in 1993 and 2001, having won the Gold Cup (CONCACAF) on six occasions. Brazil were runners-up in the Gold Cup in 1996 and 2003, having won the Copa América on eight separate occasions. Of the winning Australia team in 2015 only Tim Cahill and Mark Bresciano had also won the OFC Nations Cup.
