On 24 November 2014, Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc – the US entertainment subsidiary of the Japanese media conglomerate Sony – suffered a massive data security breach owing to a cyber-attack. Thousands of Sony documents and e-mails were published online as well as personal data, pay information and unreleased films and scripts. US intelligence sources publicly blamed the DPRK, North Korea, for launching the attack after Sony Pictures had made (and were about to launch) a comedy movie, The Interview, featuring a fictional CIA plot to assassinate its leader Kim Jong-un. The movie was eventually released online and became the company’s highest-grossing digital release of the year. As a result of this attack, the USA sanctioned 10 North Korean officials and three state organizations. It was the first time that the USA had imposed sanctions on another state in response to hacking a US company.
