The first twins known to have been born in different countries are identical twins Heidi Hilane Gannon and Katherine Joanne Baines (née Roberts) (UK, b. 23 September 1976). Heidi was born at 9:05 a.m. at Welshpool Hospital, Wales, and Jo followed at 10:45 a.m., after their mother was transferred to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, England, due to complications.

Despite having a normal pregnancy, their mum Carol Munro didn’t know she was having twins, so after Heidi was born, the umbilical cord was cut before they realised there was another baby. The family were then rushed to Shrewsbury for specialist care – and so the twins were born on different sides of the border. Despite being born in England, Jo said that she considers herself to be Welsh.
