The most goals scored in the Copa Libertadores is 54 and was achieved by Alberto Spencer (Ecuador) playing for Peñarol and Barcelona SC from 19 April 1960 to 22 March 1972. In his very first game in the Copa Libertadores (then called the Copa de Campeones), Alberto Spencer scored four goals in the Estadio Centenario and finished as top-scorer that year as his team Peñarol were crowned champions. He would go onto win South America's most prized trophy two more times: in 1961 and 1966.

Spencer was well known for his heading ability and power.
