Roger Federer (Switzerland) made his 14th consecutive appearance at the ATP World Tour Finals in London, UK, in November 2015. He has won the end-of-season event a record six times, in 2003-04, 2006-07 and 2010-11, and finished runner-up in 2005, 2012 and 2014-15.

Ivan Lendl (1980-91) held the record previously, participating at the event for 12 consecutive years.

Federer has made a record total of 15 appearances at the ATP World Tour Finals, returning to London’s O2 Arena in 2017 (when the event was rebranded as the ATP Finals) after missing the 2016 tournament through injury. Andre Agassi made 13 appearances at the ATP World Tour Finals, in 1988-91, 1994, 1996, 1998-2003 and 2005.

Federer qualified for his first ATP World Tour Finals in 2002, when the event was held in Shanghai, China. As of the end of the 2017 tournament, his win-loss record at the event was 55-13.

Only the men's players ranked 1-8 at the end of ATP tournament preceding the Finals, determined by results throughout the season, are invited to take part in the event. Five best-of-three-set matches (three in the group stages, the semi-final and the final) must be won in eight days to secure the title.

The ATP World Tour Finals were first staged in Tokyo, Japan, in 1970. The tournament has since been held in Paris, France (1971), Barcelona, Spain (1972), Boston, USA (1973), Melbourne, Australia (1974), Stockholm, Sweden (1975), Houston, USA (1976), New York City, USA (1977-89), Frankfurt, Germany (1990-95), Hanover, Germany (1996-99), Lisbon, Portugal (2000), Sydney, Australia (2001), Shanghai, China (2002), Houston, USA (2003-04), Shanghai, China (2005-08) and London, UK (2009-17).
