The 2010 musical The Scottsboro Boys by David Thompson (book), John Kander (music) and Fred Ebb (lyrics) received an outstanding 12 Tony Award nominations at the 2011 ceremony but did not win a single award. The show ran on Broadway for just two months and closed six months prior to the awards ceremony, so this figure of 12 nominations also represents the most received for a closed show. The show was nominated for Best Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (Joshua Henry), Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical (Colman Domingo and Forrest McClendon), Best Book of a Musical (David Thompson), Best Original Score Written for the Theatre (Kander & Ebb), Best Scenic Design (Beowulf Boritt), Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Ken Billington), Best Sound Design of a Musical (Peter Hylenski), Best Choreography (Susan Stroman) and Best Orchestrations (Larry Hochman). Beating the ill-fated The Scottsboro Boys on nominations was The Book of Mormon with 14, but it at least won nine of them.

The Scottsboro Boys tells the true story of nine black teenagers accused of rape in Alabama, USA, in 1931.
