Norman Painting (UK, b. 23 April 1924, d. 29 October 2009) starred as Philip Archer for 59 years and 177 days, from the first ever pilot episode of The Archers, broadcast on 29 May 1950, to his last episode, recorded two days before his death and broadcast posthumously on 22 November 2009.
First broadcast to the English Midlands in the Regional Home Service as 'a farming Dick Barton', The Archers went national on 1 January 1951.
