The first English Premiership rugby union final to be decided in extra time was the 2013–14 final between Northampton Saints and Saracens at Twickenham Stadium in London, UK, on 31 May 2014. The English Premiership has had a final game since the 2000-01 season, but no game had gone on longer than the regulation 80 minutes, with the closest match being the 2008-09 final between Leicester Tigers and London Irish, which finished 10-9. The game was tied at 14-14 at full time after Charlie Hodgson's conversion had struck a post to deny Saracens victory. Although Saracens were leading 20-17 going into the final minute of the added 20 minutes, they were defeated by Alex Waller's try in the final play of a thrilling final. It was their first ever Premiership win.
