The cat that has travelled the greatest amount by sea is Princess Truman Tao-Tai, a female Siamese cat. During her 16-year life, she travelled 2,400,000 km, beginning her epic life-long journey in 1959 when as a kitten she joined the crew of the British iron-ore carrier Sagamire. She owed her exceptionally long, unbroken time at sea due to the fact that for quarantine reasons she was never allowed onshore when Sagamire docked. She died in 1975, just a few months after the vessel's owners sold it to an Italian firm. Another exceedingly well-travelled sea cat was Doodles, a female cat who notched up a total of 1,600,000 km while living aboard the White Star liner Cedric. However, her tally was not a continuous, unbroken one because, unlike Princess Truman Tao-Tai, Doodles was sometimes allowed onshore while her vessel was in port. She retired to a country hotel in the Derbyshire Peak District town of Bamford in December 1955.
