Native to South America's central and eastern regions, the hyacinth or hyacinthine macaw Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus measures up to 100 cm (39 inches). This makes it the world's longest parrot.

Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus weighs up to 1.7 kg (3 lb 11.9 oz) and is a popular pet cage bird in spite of its huge size. It is exceeded in weight only by the kakapo or owl parrot Strigops habroptilus, an extremely rare, flightless species of parrot endemic to New Zealand that can weigh up 3.5 kg (7 lb 11.4 oz).
