The most humans rescued by a dog in 24 hours is 37, achieved by a pet male rottweiler called Orion during the night of 15–16 December 1999. His rescues took place during the Vargas tragedy in Venezuela, when torrential rains and resulting debris flows in that country's Vargas State killed thousands of people there (over 10% of the state's total population) and destroyed countless homes. Orion repeatedly entered deep waters near the home of his master, Mauricio Pérez Mercado, swimming out to people in the waters and bringing them back safely to shore. During that single night, 37 people were counted by observers as being rescued by Orion (and it is possible that there were others not counted amid the havoc of the tragedy), ranging in age from an eight-year-old girl to an 80-year-old man, and including eight children that he helped climb up to higher, safer levels of dry land. In recognition of his bravery and immense contribution to the saving of human life during the Vargas tragedy, on 26 February 2000 Orion was awarded a number of medals and other plaques by the Venezuelan government as well as by various private institutions, and he became known thereafter as "El Perro Valiente" ("the valiant dog"). On 1 December 2008, Orion died from gastroenteritis.
