Whereas other penguin species nest in colonies, often high-density ones, the yellow-eyed penguin Megadyptes antipodes is the world's least colonial, least social penguin species, as it nests alone, out of sight of all other penguins, each with its own separate nesting site, located in forests, scrub, or dense flax. It is native to New Zealand plus the subantarctic Auckland and Campbell Islands. This very rare species was originally confined to the Auckland and Campbell Islands, but increased its distribution northwards to include southern New Zealand when the closely related but slightly smaller Waitaha penguin M. waitaha became extinct there several centuries ago. There are 17 penguin species in total.
