The earliest known species of penguin is Waimanu manneringi, which inhabited New Zealand approximately 62 million years ago, during the Palaeocene epoch. Just like all subsequent species known to science, it was already flightless, and probably resembled the modern-day divers or loons belonging to the taxonomic order Gaviiformes.
Waimanu manneringi was formally described and named in 2006. Waimanu is Maori for "water bird", and manneringi honours Al Mannering, who found the type specimen or holotype upon which this species is based. It was discovered near Waipara, North Canterbury.
