On 25 November 2014, astronaut Barry Wilmore (USA), commander aboard the International Space Station (ISS) used a 3D printer to print an extruded plate with “Made in Space” and the NASA logo on it. The 3D printer is being used as part of a microgravity experimental installation to trial the printing of 3D objects astronauts need, rather than having to wait for supply rockets to bring such objects every few months or so. With a supply of general print material, the printing of objects becomes a truly on-demand activity. The ultimate aim of these preliminary experiments will be to print larger structures that will help us explore space and colonize neighbouring worlds.
