On 14 November 1922, two news bulletins became the first transmissions to be made by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), from Marconi House on the Strand in London, UK. That was 92 years ago, and the corporation is still going strong – making it the world’s oldest public service broadcaster (that is, a broadcaster whose primary remit is to benefit the public – rather than to make a profit).
Today, the BBC produces 10 national TV channels, 10 national radio stations and 40 local radio stations – as well as internet broadcasting via its iPlayer service. The BBC is ultimately owned by the British Government and funded through the UK general public via the TV Licence fee. It has 23,000 employees – making it also the world’s largest broadcasting organization.
