The world’s most popular music streaming service, in terms of the total number of users, is Pandora. In 2014, the company reached an incredible 200 million users, compared with just 40 million for closest rival Spotify. Even the number of Pandora accounts that are actively being used each month – over 70 million – is greater than Spotify’s total user base. Spotify’s monthly active users is just 24 million. According to web analytics firm AppAnnie, Pandora also leads the field in terms of both downloads and revenue. Music streaming is the practice of continually downloading music, usually via the internet, from a provider. Rather like a radio broadcast, the music exists in a transient form to which the user can begin listening before the broadcast has completed (if it even has an end).
