The largest theme park to be based on, and mostly staffed by, people with dwarfism is the Dwarf Empire near Kunming, Yunnan province, China. Opened in 2009 by real estate developer Chen Mingjing from Sichuan, and also known as the Kingdom of Little People, the controversial fantasy land has over 100 dwarfs of no more than 130 cm (4 ft 3.18 in) in height, and who entertain tourists with songs, dancing and other displays, including a version of Swan Lake. With their own pretend emperor, empress and army, performers are paid about US$150 (£99) per month and provided with specially designed accommodation, although for the visitors they pretend to live in 33 small mushroom-shaped dwellings. Although the Dwarf Empire has proved distasteful for those who see it as exploitative and demeaning of people with dwarfism, others see it as providing secure employment and friendship among the workers. One employee, Li Caixia, said she had found it very difficult to obtain a good job, and had been attracted to Dwarf Empire by being able to earn double what she might get from working elsewhere.
