The first unmanned test flight of NASA’s Orion spacecraft took place on 5 December 2014. Launched into space by a Delta IV heavy rocket, the capsule reached an altitude of 5,800 km and orbited Earth twice before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean 4 hours 24 minutes 46 seconds later. A descendant of the Apollo capsules that took men to the Moon, Orion has a diameter of 5 m, a height of 3.3 m and an internal habitable volume of 8.95 cubic metres. Previous NASA capsules, as well as current Chinese and Russian capsules, were designed for a maximum crew of three. Orion can carry four astronauts on deep space missions, with targets including the Moon, Mars and near-Earth asteroids. For low-Earth-orbit missions to the International Space Station, Orion can carry up to six astronauts. Orion is not expected to carry people into space until 2021.
