In August 2010, the almost fully intact carcass of a 39,000-year-old female juvenile woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) was found in permafrost in Russia's Siberian Sakha Republic. Dubbed “Yuka”, after the Yukaghir coastline where it was found, the mammoth is 3 m (9 ft 10 in) tall and weighs 5 tonnes (11,020 lb). The icy surroundings had kept the body (including the brain) exceptionally well preserved, to the extent that flesh, skin and fur had all survived. Local scientists, who made an initial examination of the carcass in 2012, were even able to extract liquid blood from it.
The mammoth is believed to have been approximately 10 years old when it died.
