According to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the highest altitude reached by a hot air balloon with a female pilot is 10,773 metres, achieved by Heidrun Prosch (AUT) on 19 August 2002. She was accompanied by skydiver Paul Steiner. They took off from Ried im Innkreis, Austria, and landed in Vöcklabruck, Austria.
