The African bush elephant Loxodonta africana has the heaviest brain of any land mammal (only those of the biggest whales are heavier among mammals). The brain of an adult bull African elephant can weigh up to 5.4 kg (11 lb 14.4 oz). In comparison, an adult male human's brain weighs a mere 1.4 kg (3 lb 1.44 oz) on average. In addition, an elephant's brain contains over 257 billion neurons, which is more than three times as many as in a human brain. An elephant's brain accounts for approximately 0.08 per cent of the animal's total body weight, whereas a horse's brain accounts for approximately 0.25 per cent of the animal's total weight, and a human's brain accounts for 2 per cent of our body weight. So although an elephant's brain is heavier in absolute terms, a human's is heavier in proportion to total body weight.
