On 12 November 1981, Ben Abruzzo, along with copilots Larry Newman, Rocky Aoki and Ron Clark (all USA), became the first people to fly a balloon across the Pacific Ocean. Departing from Nagashima, Japan, and landing in Covelo, California, USA, the "Double Eagle V" helium balloon covered 8,383 kilometres in 84 hours 31 minutes. Along with Maxie Leroy Anderson, Ben Abruzzo and Larry Newman also share the record for first helium balloon to fly across the Atlantic Ocean (a feat achieved on 17 August 1978).

The "Double Eagle V" had a volume of 11,327 cubic metres.
