On 17 August 1978, Maxie Leroy Anderson, along with copilots Ben Abruzzo and Larry Newman (all USA), became the first people to fly a balloon across the Atlantic Ocean. Departing from Presque Isle, Maine, USA, and landing in Miserey, France, the "Double Eagle II" balloon covered 5,001 kilometres in 137 hours 6 minutes.
